How to Find the Most Suitable Asthma Treatment

Emergency Plans For Childhood AsthmaWidely known 3 basic components to an effective asthma treatment which are:

Monitoring of symptoms,
Preventing triggers,
and Medication treatment.

Evaluating each component will produce a better understanding of the suitable treatment given that will help control and prevent symptoms.

Monitoring of Symptoms

This is the most basic step towards an effective asthma treatment or being in control of your asthma condition. Create an asthma action plan with your doctor, which will enable you to outline the important steps you need to take in an effort to control the symptoms. It will also indicate what actions are to be done in cases of asthma attack and manifestation of other symptoms.

In some cases, your doctor will administer an asthma peak expiratory flow meter, which is a device that determines the flow of air into your lungs. This will measure the rate of air movement out of your lungs. When the peak expiratory flow rate decreases, it means that your asthma is worsening. Your doctor might prescribe you with fast-acting medication to provide immediate relief, in any case your asthma worsens and the PEFR drops.

Preventing Triggers

Subsequent essential method in your asthma treatment plan is determining the potential triggers and avoiding it. Even in this modern time wherein most people have access to modern medicine, prevention is still better than cure. Triggers are various factors present in the environment that could set off the symptoms or worsen it. There are various types of triggers for asthmatic individuals, such as allergens, pollution, irritants, respiratory infections, and emotional stress. Each trigger is different for every individual so you need to identify yours to guard your health against them.

Once the trigger is identified, you must find a way to avoid it entirely. This might not be possible though since most of the triggers are present in the environment. The best alternative would be to limit your exposure to these triggers. Or, you can inquire with your healthcare physician about possible treatments that you can use if you suspect possible exposure to any trigger and prevent serious attacks.

Medication Treatment

There are different types of medication administered for asthma treatment. The frequency of intake, however, is determined by the frequency of the symptom manifestation.

There are 2 common types of medication given to asthmatics: quick-relief and long term control medications. Quick relief medications are basically short-acting and is used to relax your lung muscles and narrow down the air passages, in any case the patient has difficulty breathing. Presently, long term control medications are taken on a daily basis until further consultation with the doctor.
